Neuroplasticity is the key to a healthy, active brain.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganise neural connections in response to experiences throughout our life. When we perform a task, our brain fires connections between neurons, forming a pathway.


Our brains may be at their most flexible when we’re children, but recent research has suggested that we have the ability to rewire our brain as adults as well. This applies not only to skills like learning a language or an instrument, it is also possible to train your brain to become better at things like memory or focus and even replace bad habits.


Humans are creatures of habit. This means that the more we practice a certain action the more ingrained the neural pathway becomes. This explains why the first time you drive a car it feels bizarre, but once you’ve been driving for a few months it comes naturally. Neural connections are also weak when they are first formed. So, if we do not practice a skill after it is first learned we will lose it.


So how can we use neuroplasticity to upgrade our brain? The good news is that, in theory, if we practice any skill, it will start coming naturally to us. With this in mind, willpower is key! To successfully form more neural connections, you must have the willpower to carry on practicing a skill even when it is difficult.  So don’t give up when the going gets tough! Power through and you’ll discover you can master things you never dreamed of.
